Is your scalp itchy? Here are the main causes

Ouadie RhabbouronMay 4, 2026

Do you know that annoying itch that suddenly appears and intensifies throughout the day? It’s often a sign from your scalp. Stress, an imbalance in sebum production, harsh hair care products… There are many causes, but don’t worry, there are solutions too. In this article, we’ll explore the various reasons for this itching and offer tips on how to relieve and prevent it. Are you ready to finally get rid of this problem?

The main causes of itchy scalp:
dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis: the prime suspects.

Dandruff, those unsightly white flakes, is usually caused by excess sebum or the use of harsh products. It causes annoying itching, and the more you scratch, the more irritated your scalp becomes.

Seborrheic dermatitis goes even further: it is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes red patches with thick, yellowish scales. Besides the scalp, the eyebrows, the skin behind the ears, or even the sides of the nose can be affected.

How do you treat them?

Use special shampoos containing ketoconazole, salicylic acid, or zinc pyrithione.

If symptoms persist for more than two weeks, consult a dermatologist for appropriate treatment.
Psoriasis: When the body attacks itself.
Scalp psoriasis is an autoimmune disease in which the body forms thick, red, scaly plaques. These plaques itch, and scratching can cause bleeding.

Effective solutions:

Apply lotions containing corticosteroids and use medicated shampoos.

In severe cases, oral medication may be necessary.

Learn to reduce stress, as it often worsens the symptoms.

Pityriasis: Dry, scaly plaques.

The rarer pityriasis rosea can also affect the scalp. It manifests as a large, dry plaque, followed by several smaller ones.

How do you relieve the pain?

Use soothing moisturizing lotions.

Avoid scratching to prevent further skin irritation.
Pityriasis usually heals on its own within a few weeks.
Fungal infections: if the redness persists.
Fungal infections such as tinea capitis (scalp ringworm) cause itching, accompanied by redness, scaling, and sometimes localized hair loss.
