Is your scalp itchy? Here are the main causes

Ouadie RhabbouronMay 4, 2026

Follow an oral antifungal therapy and use special shampoos.
Continue treatment even if symptoms improve to prevent recurrence. Chemical reactions: Be careful with hair dyes.
Hair coloring can cause allergic reactions: itching, redness, burning, or even blistering. A common trigger is paraphenylenediamine (PPD), an ingredient often found in hair dyes.

How can reactions be avoided?

Always perform an allergy test before using any product.

If you have a sensitive scalp, you should use natural or ammonia-free hair dyes.

Sunburn: The scalp also suffers.

The sun can burn the scalp, especially if you have fine hair or hair loss. Sunburn causes itching, redness, and sometimes even dandruff.

Protect yourself!

Wear a hat or cap when exposed to direct sunlight.

Apply sunscreen spray to your scalp if needed.

For sunburn, soothe the skin with aloe vera.
Stress and anxiety: Nervous itching.
Stress can cause itching by releasing pro-inflammatory substances. This is known as emotional itching.

What can I do to calm myself down?

Use relaxation techniques: meditation, yoga, deep breathing.
Use gentle, moisturizing scalp care products.
Consult a doctor or pharmacist if itching becomes unbearable.
Lice: Still a problem.

Adults can also get head lice, especially through contact with children. The itching is particularly intense behind the ears and on the neck.

Effective treatment:

Use special head lice shampoos and a fine-toothed lice comb to remove the nits. Disinfect bedding and clothing to prevent re-infestation.
Practical tips for relieving itching:
Use mild shampoos and avoid very hot water.
Don’t scratch with your fingernails to avoid damaging the skin. Moisturize your scalp regularly, especially during dry periods. Maintain a balanced diet for healthy hair.
When to see a doctor:

If the itching persists or is accompanied by redness, spots, scaling, or hair loss, you should consult a dermatologist. Determining the exact cause is essential for the correct treatment.

An itchy scalp can be bothersome and even debilitating. Although it can have many causes, there’s a solution for every case. Don’t suffer from this problem any longer: an accurate diagnosis and the right treatment will help you regain your well-being and inner peace.
