Our neighbors have adopted various preventative measures:
- Spain : mandatory health check-up every five years after age 65.
- Denmark : medical examination required from age 75.
- Italy : Psychotechnical assessment to retain one’s license.
- Netherlands : five-yearly medical check-up from age 75.
- In France, a proposal to introduce mandatory medical checkups was rejected in 2023, deemed too restrictive and potentially stigmatizing . The discussion, however, is not over…
Prioritize support over coercion
Rather than imposing, wouldn’t it be better to encourage? Several mechanisms could be developed:
- Voluntary assessments: simple check-ups to take stock of one’s abilities.
- Tailored training courses: to become familiar with new rules or technologies.
- Practical workshops: local sessions to adapt one’s driving to one’s age.
- Specific equipment: automatic vehicles , driver assistance systems or warning systems.
Like hiking equipment , these solutions allow experienced drivers to maintain their autonomy safely.
