Christmas cactus: that’s all it takes to make it bloom as if by magic.

Ouadie RhabbouronApril 8, 2026

It sits proudly in the living room every winter… but sometimes stubbornly refuses to bloom. The Christmas cactus is one of those plants we love to give or receive in December. And when it refuses to flower, the disappointment is very real. Should we change its location, its watering, or give up all hope this year? Before throwing in the towel, know that a simple little trick can make all the difference.

The Christmas cactus, a plant like no other

Contrary to what its name suggests, the Christmas cactus dislikes both extreme drought and direct sunlight. Native to humid regions, it naturally grows clinging to trees, sheltered from direct rays. This explains why it thrives indoors in soft light. Its most charming characteristic, of course, remains its winter flowering, when most plants are looking rather drab.

Its elegant and delicate flowers come in red, pink, white or orange, and instantly bring a warm atmosphere to the home, like a botanical nod to the holiday season.

The ideal conditions for it to flourish
