I never understood what that loop on your shirt was for until someone showed it to me

You’ve probably noticed it before without ever really paying attention. That little loop of fabric sewn onto the back of some shirts, just below the collar… A decorative detail? A designer’s whim? A secret trick? For years, it went unnoticed in our closets. And yet, behind this tiny piece of fabric lies an amazing story, both practical and charming.

What is the real purpose of the loop on the back of shirts?

It is officially called the “locker buckle”. It was popularized in the 1960s by the American brand GANT, specializing in elegant and casual style shirts.

Back then, university and sports club changing rooms weren’t equipped like they are today. Hangers weren’t always available, nor were there practical solutions for hanging shirts without creasing them. As a result, clothes sometimes ended up crumpled up on a bench.

The small loop was therefore a simple and ingenious solution:

  • hang the shirt on a hook,
  • avoid unsightly creases,
  • keep your clothes clean and presentable.

A clever detail, designed for everyday use. And frankly, we love this kind of tip that simplifies life!
